We are full of Olympic pride here at Philip Kingsley – 52 medals for Great Britain so far! We’re not sure if it’s just us here at PK who get the urge to exercise after watching our amazing British athletes compete, but we’d like to share some of the benefits that keeping your body fit has on your hair and scalp.

While you should probably leave the heavy lifting and lightening bolt speeds to the professionals, moderate exercise can really help increase feelings of general wellbeing. Yoga, meditation, pilates, jogging and even brisk walks can all help reduce stress. And stress can, through a convoluted route, actually trigger or exacerbate hair loss and dandruff by increasing androgen (male hormone) levels in your body. However, it’s important to note that extreme exercise can also increase androgen levels and trigger hair loss. We recommend mild to moderate work-outs, depending on what you are comfortable with and what your doctor recommends. You should also cater your nutritional intake to the amount of exercise you do to keep your body and follicles nourished. Proteins and complex carbohydrates are always important to the health of your hair, but when you exercise, more are needed to keep your energy levels sustained.

Furthermore, moderate exercising encourages daily shampooing, which according to PK is the most important thing for healthy hair and scalps. Washing your hair every day stimulates blood flow to your scalp, exfoliates dead skin cells so that your hair is able to grow better and also cleanses daily build-up of dirt and grime from your hair. Think of how dirty your face gets at the end of the day. Well, that same amount of muck coats your tresses too, making it less shiny and bouncy than it’s capable of being.

In honour of the Olympics, Philip Kingsley Clinic London is offering a 20% discount on all spa treatments during the Olympics and Paralympics. Please call our London office to make an appointment.
